Wedding Bells and Tandem Bicycles

The summer months are truly the most glorious time for a wedding – there is nothing lovelier than a couple declaring their ‘I do’s at a village church, followed by an old fashioned reception, perhaps in a country cottage garden (complete with bunting galore).. you get the picture. Pimms, Ale, finger food, hats, laughter, tears, and amazing memories that the couple will have with them for the rest of their lives.

I am feeling very inspired by the ‘Wedding Season’ as I am actually helping one of my very very dear friends make some oh so pretty ‘Save the Date’ cards (Invitations and table decorations will follow in the coming months.. there is lots still to be designed!)

I recently discovered the adorable By Poppy, With Love who make the most amazing prints for special occasions, and I am in love with their beautiful wedding prints, especially this gorgeously simple Tamdem ‘Bicycle made for two’ personalised print:

Daisy, Daisy,
Give me your answer do!
I’m half crazy,
All for the love of you!
It won’t be a stylish marriage,
I can’t afford a carriage
But you’ll look sweet upon the seat
Of a bicycle made for two.

Hello Summer?

Well well well… what a washout this summer is proving to be!!! After such a promising start in April, it seems like the weather gods have gotten a little bit confused and are sending us the April showers now!! Our vegetables, which were all pretty late starters, are loving the rain, but I think that they are the only ones who are!! (and In case you were wondering, we have courgettes, beans, sweetcorn, beetroot, peas, peppers, cucumbers, and apples!)

The highlight of our summer so far does have to be the 5 days spent at the amazing Glastonbury Festival at Mr Eavis’ farm down in Pilton. The rain greeted us on arrival, and (after being soaked while putting up the tents) following a speedy change of clothes and a cup of tea, we were set to make the most of the (very muddy) festival, and what a festival it turned out to be!

The absolute must-have glasto essential had to be the humble (or mighty) wellington boot!! We took our trusty Dunlop wellies, which have accompanied us to many a festival, and boy did they help us through it this time.

We sure needed them when faced with this:

Mud

Spending 5 days in the great outdoors has inspired us to make the garden THE place to be this summer (yes, even with the rain). Think bunting, candles in jamjars, picnics, BBQ’s, Pimms o’clock, G&T’s cucumber sandwiches.. you get the picture.

Garden

Springtime and birdsong

Well what a busy month February was! After a trip to the beautiful City of Venice, we have had weekends away around the UK, in lovely Kent and now North Wales, we are feeling truly inspired by the ever-changing scenery, and very excited about March. This is the month when we finally say goodbye to Winter, and welcome spring with the changing of the clocks, and enjoy the lighter evenings.

Lighter evenings and rising temperatures also hails the beginning of the 2011 gardening frenzy, a time to plan which yummy veggies we are going to grow this season. Our garden is already a haven for little birds, and our bug box means we are one step closer to organic gardening, hooray! Watch this space for oh so cute garden goodies that will be coming to our shop soon!

Also this month my lovely sister (a baking goddess!) has introduced me to a new favourite treat – Whoopie Pies! (look out for a little feature at the end of next weeks blog)

Finally, we are currently looking for stockists for out wares, if you are interested please email us info@lookslikerain.co.uk

Thanks!

Spring (clean) into action!

Now that the Christmas and New year holidays are an oh so distant memory, it’s time to start seriously getting things sorted for 2011! And the dark evenings are a perfect time to get things organised at home. Last week we cleaned the nooks and crannies that are usually overlooked, and packed up all unused bits and bobs and banished them into the loft! Now that the junk is out of the way its time to get properly organised..

First on our list is this gorgeous (and oh so useful!) wire mail box from Not On The High Street - this will look gorgeous on our newly tidy hallway table, and mean that letters will never go astray again!

The one thing that we have just got our hands on (and LOVE) is this absolutely fabulous sewing basket from the ever desirable Cath Kidston. The perfect home for all our little bits and pieces that have been unhappily sitting in a scruffy cardboard box.. and well, it was in the sale…!

So, mail has been sorted, and sewing bits and bobs, now for the one other thing that is always left till last… Paperwork!! (boo!)

Well, with this pretty box file organiser from Not On The High Street you’ll never want to leave the paperwork to last again, you’ll be itching to put it away straight away! One of these would look beautiful on our desk!! I think it’s time to start on next year’s Christmas List… x

Rain rain go away, come again another day

Welcome to the first blog post of 2011! Christmas and New Year ended 2010 in style, and everyone is feeling refreshed after a break from work!  We all know that January isn’t everyone’s favourite month – it’s cold, the evenings are still dark, and everyone is watching the pennies after the expense of December. However there are always little things that can keep you feeling cheerful during this dark and mostly soggy time.

For one thing, if you haven’t already invested in a new pair of gloves during the recent cold snap, then we would recommend you do so sharpish! There are so many pretty pairs out there at the moment and as well as keeping your fingers toasty warm, the patterns are so cute they guarantee to make you smile! We have spotted these gorgeous Fairisle Gloves from Toast made from lambswool, their long cuff will keep your arms toasty warm too!

This oh-so-cute and ever so tiny Spray Flowers Tiny Umbrella from Cath Kidston has us head over heels and wishing for the rain to stay! It’s the perfect size for even a little handbag so you’ll never get caught out again. We know you’ll want to take it everywhere but always remember – never open an umbrella indoors!!

Spray Flowers Tiny Umbrella from Cath Kidston, £20

And finally, a little treat for those of you who have been saving your pennies and have a little bit to spend in the sales (or just to spend!), this beautiful Candy Flowers Roberts Radio from Cath Kidston would have you entertained at home on these dark and miserable winter evenings.. We have started saving already!!

Sunsets and turning leaves

The last few days have really started to show the first signs of Autumn – beautiful sunsets, golden leaves and puddles on the pavement. Also, this weekend the clocks are changing which gives us a whole extra hour in bed! Mmmm..

With the evenings becoming dark and a chill in the air, we have spent this week thinking about keeping warm at home and snuggling up under the duvet. These beautiful pillow cases from All Things Original have us feeling inspired to have a hot bath, cup of cocoa and a super early night!!

Set of Sweet Dreams Pillow Cases by Karin Akesson

We love all things birds (check out our “One swallow does not make a Summer” bag in the store!) and have many beautiful bird-related things in our house (and garden!), and are always on the look out for other lovely items to add to our collection. As well as these beautiful pillows, we couldn’t resist adding in the adorable pin from Not On The High Street:

We think these are the perfect stocking filler for friends and family this christmas!! They are definitely on our wishlist from Santa. Pretty please!!!

Frost forecast

At lookslikerain.co.uk we love finding ways to cheer up the home, without cracking open the paint or attempting the wallpapering!! One of our favourite ways to change the look in our home quickly and easily (we are a little bit obsessed actually, but shhh!) is by adding a lovely new print to the wall! We have been looking at some beautiful prints that are on our wishlist from the wonderful Keep Calm Gallery :

1) An A to Z of London by Laura Seaby

2) Boat of Life by Lesley & Pea

3) Tea Revives You – LARGE! By Hayley & Lucas

We couldn’t decide which was our favourite so we decided to share all three with you! If you have any favourite prints, please do get in touch and let us know.

Dark nights drawing in

Now that the air is chilly and the evenings dark, we have been spending time looking forward to Christmas, and spending time with friends and family. Inspiration for gifts and cards is coming from all over, the theme this year for us is keeping things simple. The most important things for us are the little things, so personalised gifts where you know a lot of thought has gone into the gift are a thumbs up from us! Our shop has a few personalisable items, such as the Lavendar Heart and the “Alphabet” Bag. Check them out and let us know what you think!

As well as gifts for friends and family we have been a little bit naughty and looking at pretty things we would like from Santa! We have spotted a few gorgeous gifts that we wouldn’t say no to:

The Aviray’s beautiful brooches have us swooning head-over-heels, especially their gorgeous Magpie Brooch:

Check out their page http://the-aviary.co.uk/

The Aviary Magpie Brooch

We have also been hoarding bits and pieces from around the house, hoping to be able to use them in creative ways this christmas for our christmas cards and decorations. Looks like November is going to be a month of experimenting with lots of cutting and sticking! We might even treat ourself to a customs made rubber stamp from Blade Rubber Stamps. Ooh the possibilities!!

Sunshine and showers

So after another busy week, the weekend has arrived and with it time to relax and think about the wonderful things that we can look forward to, like Halloween, Bonfire night, and of course Christmas! Yesterday involved a little trip to IKEA, and with is came home a whole host of lovely christmassy things for our home – lovely little reindeer decorations for the tree, and mirror stars and angels for, well, anywhere that we can find space to hang them! Our wrapping paper this year is also sorted, we are going to a red and blue theme, and we found the most adorable red/hessian twine, which will be holding handmade nametags on all of our presents under the tree.

The loveliest thing that we bought however, was this wintery blue and white jug, which I fell in love with the moment I saw it!

This sunday is going to be spent planning christmassy gifts, hampers (with homemade chutneys!) and home decorations (christmas bunting perhaps?).

Let us know if you are planning to make homemade gifts this christmas, or if you have seen any must-have decorations!
